From L-R, Jeff Kenny, Jay Redfearn and Thusith Mahanama in the Assette booth at InvestOps 2022.
Our return to in-person events started off with a bang! This time last week, we were in Tampa Florida at InvestOps and preparing to attend the annual CFA Market Dinner in Boston. We had a great time and it was fantastic to be face-to-face with so many clients, partners and friends.
While many people were doing the events like it’s 2019 again, there were a few subtle differences. If, like us, you’ve been working from home for 2+ years, interacting with people face-to-face in a professional setting can take some practice.
Say goodbye to your favorite sweatpants and in-depth conversations with the dog! It’s time to get back to in-person events. Here are a few reminders based on our experiences:
- Be Kind: The last two years have been filled with new experiences (some good, some bad and some traumatic) for everyone. For some people, getting back out there is hard, others aren’t giving it a second thought. Wherever you are at, be kind and mindful that others around you may be handling things differently.
- Exercise is key: Small-talk is a muscle that needs to be exercised. Have patience and be ready for a few awkward moments as we all get in the groove again.
- Be yourself: Do what you need to be comfortable and be considerate of others doing the same thing. It’s okay to wear a mask if it isn’t mandated. If you don’t want to shake hands that’s okay too. If you are back to hugging colleagues you haven’t seen in a while, that’s great (although asking first is probably a good idea).
- Read the room: There’s some uncertainty in our industry and world right now. Add in people adjusting to being back in crowds and it’s more important than ever to take a moment and figure out the mood/vibe of a room before engaging.
- Reconnect in a meaningful way: Don’t miss the opportunity to re-connect in a meaningful way. Seek people out and check in with more than a “how are things?” Take 5 minutes at the start of a meeting to chat and plan for a little extra time while networking at morning coffee.
