Assette CEO Thusith Mahanama moderated a packed session on managing data in a self-service business intelligence environment at the recent Institutional Investor Data & Analytics Symposium in Chicago. Chief data officers in the investment industry and other experts offered their insights on the topic. Mahanama led and guided the discussion from his own experience founding Assette, which turns investment data into content for client reporting, marketing presentations, DDQs and more, about 25 years ago.
A few key themes emerged in the discussion, many of which Assette offers solutions to tackling. They included:
- Who is demanding more self-service data tools? Investor clients and prospects are demanding more data and content as they monitor their asset managers and review potential new managers to bring on board. Thus, the demands on asset managers to provide data is soaring. Asset management sales professionals, marketers, client reporting teams, compliance personnel and more all need accurate data to be a few clicks away. And “accurate” is a key term there. Providing data quickly and making sure it’s accurate is more important than ever.
- How are asset management firms governing and protecting their data? Asset management teams are getting leaner and participants at the session noted the need to be confident that the data they are pulling is accurate and review and approval processes are streamlined. Making updates automatically across various materials such as client reports, marketing materials, pitchbooks and more is also important to ensure all materials tell the same story. Controlled access to data and cascading data updates throughout the system is more important than ever.
- How are asset management firms maintaining brand guidelines in a more self-service-focused environment? Maintaining brand consistency, including logo usage, visual elements, colors and more, among all an asset management firm’s content is crucial to controlling a brand’s image. And when brand guidelines change, seamlessly updating materials to match the new guidelines is more and more important.
“Asset managers increasingly need tools to manage their data and content and make it easily available to members of their teams such as sales, marketing and compliance,” said Mahanama. “At the same time, the need for consistency and accuracy in their data remains high due to the nature of our business. Technology like Assette meets these two challenges head on.”
